Mortlockese is a dying language spoken by less than 6,000 people. They are a subset of the Chuukese group in Micronesia. They live in Mortlock Islands (AKA, the Namoi Islands) in Chuuk State, Micronesia.
Mortlockese are known for their navigational skills. They were among the best sea navigators in the Pacific Islands. At one time, this meant they settled in many islands. Today they live on their home islands.
Their arts and crafts are known for their beauty. Mortlockese baskets and other woven goods are intricately crafted. They also produce wooden carvings.
Information is passed on through oral means. They tell stories about their history, myths, and notable events. Story-telling binds them together as a community and connects them with their past.
Most Mortlockese are Christian, and they have strong Evangelical churches that God can use to spread the good news.
Mortlockese speakers need to keep their language. English and other languages are replacing it.
